The Weeknd has been on fire all year, so it’s not exactly a big shock that you can see him on the cover of this month’s Esquire Magazine. Since Blinding Lights has been going off non-stop on our Like Line, we’ve been playing the song, uh, a lot.

Okay, way more than a lot. That’s why one particular thing caught our eye in that cover story: the thing where he explains the meaning behind the song.

It’s interesting. Also, he’d like you to know to just not ever do it.  Ever.

He says that Blinding Lights is about:

“[H]ow you want to see someone at night, and you’re intoxicated, and you’re driving to this person and you’re just blinded by streetlights, but nothing could stop you from trying to go see that person, because you’re so lonely. I don’t want to ever promote drunk driving, but that’s what the dark undertone is.”

So there you go. Just don’t drive drunk. (Drunk dialing, of course, is another matter entirely, though you probably shouldn’t do that either.)

And now, some quality Weeknd memories for you to enjoy…
