After Cats came out in December, there were many mixed reviews about the film. The remake featured stars including Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, Idris Elba, Judi Dench, Rebel Wilson, and Jason Derulo.
As we reported, many went to Twitter to slam the movie. One user wrote, “#CatsMovie is terrible. A descent into madness, while at the same time showing you what the gates of hell might look like. This is the best way to torture someone. This comes from someone who can appreciate musicals. I did burst out laughing when the first cat jumped out singing.” And many of the other reviews and tweets were similar.
Sadly, Andrew Lloyd Webber, who composed the songs from the Broadway version of Cats, and worked on the movie soundtrack, also didn’t like the production. In a recent interview, he gave his two cents on the film, and it wasn’t positive.
Per the New York Post, he said, “The problem with the film was that Tom Hooper decided that he didn’t want anybody involved in it who was involved in the original show.” He added, “The whole thing was ridiculous.”
Although the Cats cast probably won’t win any Oscars for the film, it did win lots of Razzies. As the New York Post points out, the movie won Worst Picture, Worst Supporting Actor and Actress (James Corden and Rebel Wilson), Worst On Screen Combo, Worst Screenplay, and Worst Director.
